There are a few such specialized ER that are currently operating on a trial bases. The environment is calm and quiet and there have been no geriatric patients falling in the reported geri-ER. There are volunteers circulating keeping the patients active with puzzles and conversation. A simulated skylight will aid patients to sleep during the night and wake up to the "rising sun" in the morning. Patients rate their experience and so far all feed back has been extremely positive.
Doctors discuss the pro's and con's of the geri-ER. Is specialized care units for seniors maintaining equal care for all? Is it a marketing gimmick, or is it necessary for the aging population? The article looks at both sides.
