Continued bullying leads to suicide...

I was reading some articles on bullying and came across this one. There are millions of disappointing incidents we can talk about. This is one of them.

Eleven-year old Jaheem Herrera hanged himself by his belt in his closet after continued bullying by his schoolmates. He had complained several times to his mother about his schoolmates troubling him by calling him "gay, ugly and "the Virgin" because he was from the Virgin Islands." His mother had also companied to the school "seven or eight times", but that was of no use.

On April 16, 2009, Jaheem woke up and was acting in a strange manner. He didn't want to eat anything or go to school. However, he still went to school and was much happy than he was in the morning because of his report card full of A's and B's. He handed over his report card to his mother and went to his room. Later that evening, Jaheem's younger sister called him for dinner but there was no reply. When Jaheem's mother, Masika Bermudez, and his sister went up to his room to see what was going on, they found Jaheem hanging in his closet by his belt.

Bermudez explained to the CNN how her kids and she herself were all traumatized after the incident. She also explained how her son loved to make new friends but was only able to make enemies at that school. She said , "Maybe he said 'You know what - I'm tired of telling my mom, she's been trying so hard, but nobody wants to help me.' "

I think bullying is a very big issue today at schools. Millions of dollars invested in anti-bullying campaigns seem to be all wasted when incidents like these come out. I also see parents talking to their children about bullying and explaining how important it is to report these incidents. However, a lot of children don't report these incidents to their parents or anyone else for help as they too scared to do so. But Jaheem always complained about this torture to his mother, who further went to the school for help, and that too, "seven or eight times". Even after asking for help, Jaheem was left without any help. So for him, how did complaining and asking for help provide any help to Jaheem? He had to lose his life in the end anyway.

What do you think can be done to solve this?
