Radio frequency identification (RFID)

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a term that is used to describe a system that transmits the identity (in the form of a unique serial number) of an object or person wireless, using radio waves. It's grouped under the broad category of automatic identification technologies. The purpose of an RFID system is to enable data to be transmitted by a portable device. RFID is a fairly old technology but it was only in the last 30 years that it was considered to be used for non-military purposes (Business, 2012). Its unique features can be very helpful in retail industry, for example, compact size and long life usage. However, due to its early phase of development, the cost for each RFID tags is still high for retail use. Despite the relatively high cost of implementing for a normal retail chain, Wal-Mart has already begun to use RFID. RFID has an advantage in reducing human error costs compared to manual inventory checks. Labor costs have a trend to increase over time while costs in manufacturing high-technology products are constantly decreasing.

ANALOGY: They will therefore not be in a hurry to risk their entire business by expanding too rapidly, but they are the major indicator of whether the manufacturing industry accepts there is a sustainable business in RFID production.
