Google Goggles - Add this to your app library!

"Google Goggles" is a application that is available on both Android and iPhone operating systems.  It provides an very interesting "look" on the technological world we live in today.

The app essentially searches the web with pictures instead of text using optical character recognition (OCR). For example you can take a picture of your textbook cover and the app will search the web for websites and information relating to your textbook cover.  When I searched my professional communications textbook I was directed to Amazon.com which provided me with an overview of the book and the ability to purchase it for $108.99 USD.  The app is not limited to books, it is also useful for pictures of text, landmarks, contact info, artwork, wine, and logos.

The relevance of this application may seem simple and fun (which it is), but it can also be used in a practical sense. You can search landmarks for information while travelling or maybe if you are lost. Possibly even more handy is the integration of the Google Translate app which can convert the text you have taken a picture of and translate into a large variety of international languages.

This app offers a new and innovative way to communicate in a functional, mobile platform. Google is looking at expanding the apps availability to other devices and utilizing the functionality of the app to provide additional services to a broader range of users.
