Leading business bloggers state that the authenticity of a CEO plays a major role in their assessment of the leaders overall performance and abilities. According to interviews conducted by The 10 Company and Gotham Research Group, several business bloggers deemed 5 phrases as showing a lack of authenticity when being used by CEOs.

The list below shows the top 5 phrases business bloggers quote as being "Phony." The phrases are followed by reasons the bloggers came up with to describe why they thought the quotes showed a lack of authenticity.

The Top 5 Phrases That Raise Concerns About "Lack Of Authenticity":
  1. This deal is a win-win  (few business deals, if any, are really a win-win)
  2. Thinking/Working/ Planning outside the box (phrase viewed as "corporate-speak")
  3. We are not here to talk about the past (phrase is clichéd)
  4. We are an innovative company (innovation has become an empty promise)
  5. Executive X is stepping down to spend more time with his family (Phrase is code for an executive being forced out of a job)
