I found this article on The Economist website, and I think its extremely easy to relate to what we have been learning in class.
The title is The people formerly known as the audience.
It focuses on how the advances in social-media technologies allow a wider range of people to take part in discussions of news topics.
This I completely agree with. The different social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, as well as different blogs allow for great discussions of news topics. Also, there is a much wider range of audience on social media sites, then there is watching the nightly news. Therefore the amount of people that these stores reach on these sites is much greater. For example, you often see, especially on Facebook, pages dedicated to certain news articles, asking for support and guidance.
It also states that journalists are becoming more inclined to see and use blogs, Facebook, Twitter and other forms of social media as a valuable adjunct to traditional media. Also, it looks specifically at how the audience in respect to this is changing as well.
I think this part of the article is extremely interesting. The people that we have always depended on for the most recent and up to date news, are now using social media outlets, and the general public in order to get their stories. The fact that the general public is now contributing to the creation of news just goes to show how important these social media sites are to the modern day society. The fact that students like us can add to that makes one think… we are all journalists in some sense!
Take a look at the full article, its quite interesting.
