This link gives good interview tips; what to do when an interviewer throws you a curve ball. These tips are also good strategies to follow in all professional communication to make sure you don’t “screw up.”
- Prepare yourself: there no doubt that this is important before any type of communication. Make sure you have done your research, and you know your stuff (both, on the topic and the audience). If not, you risk screwing up and being negatively judged.
- Interview the interviewer: Ask questions! One of the easiest ways to screw up is not asking the right questions.
- Restate the question in your own words: This is a way to gain confirmation that you have understood the question. It also buys a bit of time; restating the question, gives you a bit of time to cook up a good answer.
- Think aloud: Sometimes it’s good for the person asking you a question to know what your thought process is. It gives them a chance to hear what is running through your head and how you are drawing a particular conclusion.
- Discount the easy answer: If the answer was easy, somebody would’ve figured it out a long time ago and it wouldn’t be asked of you! If it seems like the answer is easy, you aren’t thinking creatively enough.
- Summarize your final response: You may have lost the attention of your audience - a quick final summary will make sure they have caught the key point of what you have said.
I suggest giving this article a read.
