Albert's Fear

"I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots" - Albert Einstein

What Albert Einstein once feared is now reality. The days of face to face communication are long gone. Today, the main form of communication has fallen under the umbrella of text messaging, Facebook, and Twitter. The youth in todays society rely on technology to communicate. For example, No ones picks up the phone to talk, or writes letters. Yes technology is fast and easy, but the act of communication has become extinct. People cannot communicate in person like they used to in the past. Conflict used to arise from our physical actions and words. Now anyone can just sit behind a computer or a cell phone and say what they want. Communication is being lost through these means of technology, and the little things we know today need to be passed on and saved.

  1. MFC, you have made a valuable point on the lack of face to face communication in today's society, however there are other factors to consider.

Bill Gates has stated, "I'm a great believer that any tool that enhances communication has profound effects in terms of how people can learn from each other, and how they can achieve the kind of freedoms that they're interested in."

Although no one is writing letters and mailing them the old fashioned way, or calling someone up out of the blue, there are many ways in which social media and technology has benefited the world we now live in. For example, Facebook allows us to connect with people we have lost touch with through the years, and learn about the ways of life in other parts of the world on a new level. It also allows us to connect with people through our current friends, and as a result share laughs and thoughts with those who we may not feel comfortable talking to face to face. Social media such as twitter and Facebook also allows us to understand the world around us, giving up to the minute news about on-goings on the other side of the planet. That, is something amazing, and not to be forgotten.

  2. ^ Social media and technology also lets individuals who don't know each other, communicate on various issues and topics on the internet. This is an advancement in communication, as the internet provides a platform where open discussion can take place, that wouldn't be possible with a letter or phone call. A great example of this is the use of Twitter!

  3. Yes of course it does. I am able to connect with my friends and family around the world too; something that could be difficult to do without technology.

But, technology has increased negative behaviors too. People bully each other everyday behind a computer. People hack into companies and steal their information. People steal other people's money through scamming. People invade others' privacy. The list could go on! These activities would be difficult to do without technology, don't you think!

Im not saying that it is bad, but I do believe that communication skills have declined, and that illegal activities have increased.

    1. What that quote actually says, is that people are finding it better to interact virtually than face to face. They are turning themselves into bloody robots who can't even empathize with their fellow humans and transfer positive emotions, and share valuable, simple though priceless moments like laughing together at a dinner table or enjoying the breeze of the beach with a loved one beside you. The essence of us being humans and enjoying life, is slowly being taken away by the over-use of technology though its purpose is ironically to improve it. People are forgetting how to be social beings for God's sake! Have you had a conversation with a twenty year old recently?
